![]() ![]() Why is LifeWorks important? Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death in Ontario. In Ontario, three-quarters of the population has one or more of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In addition, the combined total number of newly diagnosed cancers, in Ontario, is projected to increase by about two-thirds by 2020 and double by 2028 (Cancer 2020 Summary Report). In a survey of Hastings and Prince Edward counties residents, only 7.5 per cent of residents identified smoking, unhealthy eating and physical inactivity as risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In addition, only 45 per cent of residents identified 2 or more of the main risk factors (smoking, unhealthy eating, physical inactivity and sun exposure) for cancer (RRFSS, 2002). The risk factors for these diseases overlap with other chronic diseases.
